Google’s wearable Glass gadget: cool or creepy?

File photo of Google founder Sergey Brin posing for a portrait wearing Google Glass during New York Fashion Week

(Reuters) - Google staged four discussions expounding on the finer points of its "Glass" wearable computer during this week's developer conference. Missing from the agenda, however, was a session on etiquette when using the recording-capable gadget, which some attendees faithfully wore everywhere - including to the crowded bathrooms. Google Glass, a cross between a mobile computer and eyeglasses that can both record video and surf the Internet, is now available to a select few but is already … [Read more...]

The Party on my Facebook Page

The Party on my Facebook Page

An ACLU post argues that Facebook flattens our in-born privacy intuitions. In real life, we keep our networks separate, we share wild stuff with the college pals and tamer stuff with a work audience. You can designate different audiences on Facebook, but the post suggests many do not. I see the point, but I have also had the delightful experience of people from my different networks intersecting on my page. My military neighbor debates my privacy friends, my NY political pal helps out a … [Read more...]

At Google I/O, developer services hogged the spotlight

At Google I:O, developer services hogged the spotlight

Forget Glass, self-driving cars or a smartwatch. Developers, not physical consumer products, were Google's darlings at the company's annual I/O conference this week. Google brands I/O as a conference for developers, and this year, with a range of new tools unveiled to attract more outside developers -- and boost the revenue from their services -- the company sought to deliver the goods to I/O's intended audience. "Giving back to the developer community was a big theme," said Andrew … [Read more...]

A group of illegal immigrants, who handed themselves in to U.S. Border Patrol, sit in a restaurant in Encino, Texas

(Reuters) - A bipartisan plan brokered in the House of Representatives will be tougher on illegal immigrants living in the United States than a Senate counterpart, congressional aides said on Friday. But it fails to address the difficult issue of how many low-skilled foreign workers should be allowed into the country. Late on Thursday, the eight Republican and Democratic House negotiators working on an immigration bill announced that they had successfully wrapped up a four-year effort and … [Read more...]

Undated handout photo of White House Office of Management and Budget Controller Werfel

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Thursday chose a White House budget official to lead the beleaguered Internal Revenue Service and vowed to ensure that the tax-collection agency will not single out any more groups based on their political beliefs. Danny Werfel, who has been Obama's point man in overseeing the controversial "sequestration" budget cuts, will tackle the biggest scandal of Obama's presidency when he takes charge of the IRS on May 22. It could be a thankless job. The … [Read more...]
