For high school students who want to know more about a college than where it stands on Princeton Review’s annual ranking of top party schools, there’s a new tool in town to help navigate the college application process. Enter LinkedIn.

On Monday, the social networking site that serves as an online resume for job seekers and a valuable recruiting tool for employers began offering its service to teenagers under 18 for the first time. (In the U.S., users must be 14 years old to create a profile.) As part of LinkedIn’s launch of “University Pages,” teens can now browse the more than 200 school profiles that showcase career-centric information such as a list of the school’s notable alumni, or data on where alumni are employed.

College applicants curious about what percentage of the student body is involved in Greek life or how many hours you can expect to spend in the library on weekends probably won’t find what they’re looking for on LinkedIn’s new University Pages. That said, what makes LinkedIn different is its database of alumni, according Julie Inouye, a LinkedIn spokeswoman.

“We have all of this great insight and data because of the LinkedIn members that have gone to these schools,” Inouye told The Huffington Post. University Pages will allow prospective students to connect with alumni in desired fields, Inouye said.

The pages also give the colleges the ability to post Facebook-like status updates to share links and disseminate non-career related information (see screenshot below). Users can “like” a status and post comments.

The move certainly isn’t a surprising one for the decade-old site, which has about 238 million members, according to MarketWatch. Teens, of course, are spending a ton of time online. And Facebook’s popularity among the demographic may be diminishing, according to a recent survey of 5,000 teenagers by the investment bank and asset management firm Piper Jaffray, which revealed that fewer teens now consider Facebook to be the “most important” social media site than they did a year ago.

While LinkedIn won’t be making any money directly off of its University Pages — the company won’t charge universities or students to use the service, according to Inouye — the launch is yet another way for the site to expand its user base and in turn, add to its well of valuable data.

Earlier this month, LinkedIn reported a 37 percent growth in membership over last year, according to MarketWatch. The growth led to a boost in earnings last quarter, which caused its stock price to surge.

The major moneymaker for LinkedIn, which is valued at $20 billion, is its recruiting software. The software allows employers to find and contact job seekers, and the service costs recruiters about $8,500 a year, according to the Wall Street Journal.

According to a post from Forbes:

Influencers has profoundly boosted user engagement for LinkedIn. Its 225 million users viewed 63% more pages in the first quarter of 2013 than they did in the same period in 2012. Roth said that “traffic to all its news products had increased eightfold since Influencers was introduced,” according to Bits.

However, even with this boost in popularity, the professional social network is still down twelve percent from its original stock high. Linkedin will need another niche other than flaunting content from some of the world’s most popular and well-respected individuals if they hope to keep their network edge.

LinkedIn has been busy lately, issuing a number of updates and new features to its platform. Last month, the social network announced the “Professional Portfolio,” which lets you upload video and images to enhance your profile. It also added the capability to mention colleagues in status updates like you can on Facebook and Twitter.

In the last few weeks, LinkedIn has released more new features: two-step verification, the capability to add rich media to your status updates and a redesign of the feature “Who’s Viewed Your Profile.” (See also “How to become a LinkedIn power user in five easy steps.”)

Here’s what you need to know to take advantage of the new features.

How to enable two-step verification
“Most Internet accounts that become compromised are illegitimately accessed from a new or unknown computer or device,” says Vincente Silveira, director at LinkedIn. “Two-step verification helps address this problem by requiring you to type a numeric code when logging in from an unrecognized device for the first time.”

To enable LinkedIn’s two-step verification for your account, navigate to your “Privacy & Settings” page by clicking your profile picture in the upper right corner. Select the Account tab and click “Manage security settings.”

On the following page, click “Turn On.” LinkedIn will ask you to set a phone number in order to get verification codes via SMS. Your phone number will not appear on your LinkedIn profile.

Once you receive your verification code via text message, enter it on the next page. You’ll receive an alert on LinkedIn and an email confirming that two-step verification has been successfully enabled.

How to add rich media to your LinkedIn status
LinkedIn’s ” Professional Portfolio” allowed you to update photos and video only to your profile. Now you can add these to status updates, too. This feature is still rolling out to members.

To get started, click the paperclip on the right side of your share box on the LinkedIn homepage and attach a file. If you want to attach a video or other content that is hosted on another site, paste in the URL into the share box and add it to your update.

LinkedIn updates ‘Who’s Viewed Your Profile’
“‘Who’s Viewed Your Profile’ is more than just a look at who is viewing you,” says Udi Milo, product manager at LinkedIn. “[It] can also give you insights on how often your profile has been viewed and what connections or groups you have in common with them.”

This newly redesigned page is cleaner and easier to read. Premium LinkedIn members can access insights from the past three months; other LinkedIn members will have access to one month of insights.

One new feature: You can now filter search results by weeks, which LinkedIn says makes it easier to identify trends and changes to help you align your professional brand with your professional goals.

For years, LinkedIn has been trying to break past its reputation as a job-seeking site that’s all about posting your online resume.

If today’s news – that LinkedIn is allowing users and companies to post images and documents in status updates – doesn’t get that message through, we’re not sure what will.

LinkedIn was slow to get visual. It took more than four years for LinkedIn to allow something we take for granted now on almost every social site: posting a profile photo. But with last year’s acquisition of SlideShare and the introduction earlier this month of a visual “portfolio” section to the profile, LinkedIn showed it was becoming a visual learner.

A Risky Picture

The danger LinkedIn faces is that its stream of work-related content will become cluttered with the kind of vapid visual noise that has taken over Facebook’s News Feed. Facebook, in the hopes of spurring people to post better pictures of moments in their lives, started giving photos larger display. Instead, people posted picture quotes and memes.

LinkedIn seems to be more or less rolling with this particular consumer behavior: It even shows an example of someone posting an inspirational quote image.

Like it or not, this is a way a lot of people like to communicate online. So perhaps LinkedIn is smart to embrace it. But after LinkedIn and Twitter broke off their partnership last summer, requiring people to post updates directly on LinkedIn rather than porting their tweets into LinkedIn, the quality of LinkedIn’s stream of status updates improved markedly, since people primarily posted professional updates without personal updates from Twitter mixed in.

Putting images in LinkedIn’s stream could go sideways, so we have to hope its product team is watching what users do closely and adjusting accordingly.

Dropbox And Box In LinkedIn’s Sights?

One interesting aspect to LinkedIn’s update is that it’s also allowing companies to post images and documents to their company pages.

The ostensible reason for this is to appeal to the people who follow a particular company on LinkedIn, who are typically employees, job seekers, customers, or other interested parties. One obvious way a tech company might use this, for example, is to post white papers about a new product it’s rolling out.

One has to wonder, though, if this isn’t also a move to carve out part of the document-sharing business that Dropbox, Box and YouSendIt have so far dominated. That’s the public-facing sharing, where you’re not sending a document to a particular person but merely alerting people to a place from which it can be downloaded.

We don’t see LinkedIn swerving from its media-focused strategy right now. But LinkedIn’s mission isn’t to be a media company – it’s to help people succeed in their professions. So if at some point it decides sharing and collaboration around documents is part of how it accomplishes that mission, Box and the rest should worry.

For now, it’s just an interesting option LinkedIn could pursue down the road, for which it’s laying the groundwork now.

News Corp. (NWS -1.20%) is sure talking a good game, planning to challenge LinkedIn (LNKD -0.68%) and Bloomberg L.P., the parent of Bloomberg News. Many investors, however, are skeptical that the plans from Rupert Murdoch’s (pictured) media empire will amount to much.

Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal is building a challenger to LinkedIn and plans to launch a social network for professionals in coming months, according to the Times of London.

Dating website eHarmony reportedly is considering expanding into job hunting as well, further clouding the picture for News Corp., whose track record in social media includes its disastrous investment in MySpace.

As of the latest quarter, LinkedIn had 218 million members and generated more than 11 billion page views. New members signed up for the service at the astounding rate of more than two per second. Shares of LinkedIn, which have surged more than 45% this year, traded down slightly Wednesday, indicating that Wall Street isn’t too worried about the potential threat from News Corp. Indeed, News Corp. barely budged as well.

And then there’s Bloomberg, a company certainly familiar to Dow Jones CEO Lex Fenwick, who previously worked there as a high-ranking executive. According to Reuters, Fenwick Tuesday spoke to investors about a new product dubbed “DJX” that would compete with Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters (TOC). He also mentioned plans for a messaging system that would compete with Bloomberg’s terminal. Subscribers would get a two-minute jump on news broken by Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones reporters.

Bloomberg News has come under fire after customers such as Goldman Sachs (GS +1.35%) complained that its reporters were snooping on them using data that they had considered to be confidential. Though Bloomberg’s reputation has taken a hit, it’s important to remember that Bloomberg’s competitors have announced so-called “Bloomberg Killers” for years and none have amounted to much.

News Corp. CEO Robert Thompson noted the publishing company has no debt and $2 billion in cash. Of course, News Corp. is taking a write-down of $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion in the current quarter on the value of its publishing assets, some of which, such as The New York Post, reportedly haven’t been profitable for years.

Murdoch has been able to prop up his publishing business with cash cows such as Fox News Channel, which will become part of the new 21st Century Fox. He is downplaying talk that he might buy Tribune’s papers. Indeed, he has a pretty full plate now.
