There's a new open source project called Marathon that's designed to let users intelligently run a wide variety of their applications and services -- Hadoop, Storm and even standard web apps -- on the same set of servers. Marathon comes out of an early-stage startup called Mesosphere that's aiming to build a data center operating system on top of the…
Brain researcher Adam Gazzaley has published research in the scientific journal Nature that shows how a video game has helped the cognitive function of older people in the emerging field of neuro-therapeutics.
The research shows that prototype game NeuroRacer helped older people improve their ability to handle more than one task at a time. It did so by getting them to focus on catching fish and racing through a watery obstacle course at the same time.
Besides my own hands-on time and impressions of the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch, I snapped a few minutes of a video demonstration at the Samsung event in New York City. This doesn't show all of the features but instead gives you an idea of the user interface, performance and its reliance upon the Galaxy Note 3 for certain functions.
The Rams cut linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar on Tuesday, a move that was easy to see as the other shoe dropping after coach Jeff Fisher slammed Dunbar as "selfish" in the wake of the announcement of his four-game suspension for violating the league policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
Dunbar's unavailability for the first four weeks likely played a role, but the door slammed behind Dunbar as he left might be opened again in the future.

The Gap in Psychiatric Drug Research
From Gary Greenberg in the New Yorker: "Sales of psychiatric drugs amounted to more than seventy billion dollars in 2010. They have become yet another commodity that consumers have learned to live with or even enjoy, like S.U.V.s or Cheetos." So why are so many pharmaceutical companies shrinking or shuttering their neuroscience research facilities?
Over the holiday weekend, New Yorks' ed-tech community was a-buzz over an anonymous horror story posted by David Cohen, director of the TechStars accelerator program. It was a tale of an accelerator gone awry, starring an unpredictable managing director who put two companies through some major drama.
Something that juicy couldn't stay anonymous online for long. Commenters quickly determined the guilty party was…
(Reuters) – The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a resolution on Wednesday authorizing a limited U.S. military intervention in Syria, setting the stage for a debate in the full Senate next week on the use of military force.
The committee voted 10-7 in favor of a compromise resolution that sets a 60-day limit on any engagement in Syria and bars the use of U.S. troops on the ground for combat operations.
The compromise is more limited than President Barack Obama’s original proposal but meets the administration’s goal of punishing Syria for what the U.S. government says is the use of chemical weapons on Syrian civilians, killing more than 1,400 people.
I'll be honest: I didn't expect much from Samsung's new smartwatch. I figured we'd get another second screen that relies completely on a connected phone.
Having watched the Galaxy Gear unveiling and then getting some hands on time with an actual device, I think it's safe to say that Samsung's first smartwatch effort is better than I expected overall because of some additional hardware components and software features.
By now, most people have probably heard of Edward Snowden, the former CIA contractor who leaked the NSA's surveillance documents, as well as Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning, the Army private who leaked diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks. Barrett Brown, however, remains largely unknown -- despite the fact that his case is arguably even more of an outrage than either Manning or Snowden.
This is cool: IMDB user Pacey7 has been maintaining a list of pretty much every TV show available on Netflix. (s NFLX) And since it’s available on IMDB.com, it’s easy to sort that list by IMDB rankings. The result? A list of the best TV shows on Netflix (hat tip to Evan Primakow).
Of course, the list can also be sorted by other useful criteria, including the U.S.
